Can you say yuck? A sometimes necessary medication for those dealing with liver failure side effects. But there are ways to deal with the taste and there is an alternative.

Lactulose is often used to combat toxin buildup in our bodies caused by the failure of our liver filtering system. It is especially helpful in treating Ammonia overload. A condition whose symptoms may include confusion or unconscious.

Some doctors advise us to adjust our dose to an amount that will cause a bowel movement 4 to 6 times a day. Mixing the drug with soft drinks can mask the adverse taste. (7-UP, Mountain Dew, Fresca e.g.)

The Alternative: Crystalose
Crystalose comes in a powder form that you mix in a liquid. It tastes 'much' better than Lactulose and does the same thing. Some say that it works better and have reported having no ammonia overload incidents after switching. The only drawback is it costs more. If you have insurance it shouldn't be a problem. All you need to do is 'ask your doctor' for the change in your prescription.
